Luff, Slava declare Independence in races

A sweltering Montrose was the place to be as the ‘Race for Independence’ drew runners from across the region for a 10K, 5K and fun runs.

A pair of brothers from Emmaus took the top two spots in the 10K run, followed by Elk Lake senior Tyler Williams.
Former Cornell standout Sam Luff, 23, finished in a time of 35:31. Thomas Luff, 19, was just a little over a minute behind at 36:42. Factoryville’s Vickie McGrew was the first female finisher, and 10th overall with a time of 41:59.
In the 5K, John Salva of Conklin took top honors with a time of 17:15. Elk Lake’s Sean Carney finished fourth with a time 17:49. Ellen Squire was the top female finisher and 20th overall with a time of 20:23.
Jacob Peck, 10, of Friendsville, took home the honors in the Fun Run which didn’t quite make its usual mile due to a technical glitch by race organizers.
