It’s a different type of Hollywood premier with a high school track taking the place of a red carpet and the 15 teams are the stars walking it.
Movies take center stage as the theme of this year’s Susquehanna County Relay for Life.
Teams often use the event theme as the inspiration for their campsites, games and activities.
The annual event benefits the American Cancer Society.
Lynda Williams is this year’s honorary chair. Williams was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995. After undergoing chemotherapy for several months, she was cancer-free.
Williams participated in Relay for five years with her team “Lynda’s Lifesavers.”
Last year, she found out the cancer had gone into her bones and she has been in treatment for the past year and now reports she seems to be doing well.
Walking begins at 3 p.m., Friday, July 23, on the track at the Montrose Area High School. Opening ceremonies commence at 5:30 p.m.; and the survivor/caregiver ceremony follows at 6 p.m.
The survivor/caregiver dinner, sponsored by Peoples National Bank, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Please call Cindy Delaney at the American Cancer Society office, 1-800-227-2345 or email, Cindy.delaney@cancer.org to register. There will also be a chance to sign up for the dinner the day of the event.
The dinner tent will be located in an easily accessible area near the track.
Luminaria sales and basket raffles end at 8 p.m.
The Luminaria ceremony, which commemorates those who have succumbed to the disease, will be held at 9 p.m.
In addition to the ceremonial events, plenty of games and activities are planned throughout the all-night event.
Some of the contests planned by the teams include a pie-eating contest; marshmallow stuff; bingo, scavenger hunt and Dancing with the Relay Stars.
DJ Tom Kane will provide entertainment again at this year’s Relay.
Saturday morning, campers can get moving at 8:30 a.m. with morning exercises led by the Endless Mountains Health Services rehab department.
All that walking is bound to make people hungry and Relay teams can sate most any appetite with their offerings. Food available at the event includes: roasted sweet corn, pulled pork, burgers, hot dogs, popcorn, meatball subs, wimpies, pizza, penny candy and assorted baked goods.
South Auburn Community team member Terry White plans to shave her head at the Relay – IF she personally raises a pre-determined amount of money for the cause by 6 p.m., Friday evening.
At a team meeting last week, South Auburn team captain Tammy Schaeffer reported that White told her she was close to her fundraising goal but wouldn’t disclose the amount she was aiming for.
The public is invited to attend the event; play games and purchase items from the teams and vendors – all to support each team’s final donation.
