Repeat winners shine at Penn Can

In the companion super late model main event, Dan Stone of Thompson made it two in a row, while Grant Hilfiger of Canandensis won again in the crate sportsman. Shane Wolf Sr. of Susquehanna nipped Butch Green of Newark Valley, N.Y., at the line for another street stock win while John Warren of New Milford made it two in a row in the four cylinders.

Mike Lartz and Bobby Trapper led the modified field to Gary Folk Jr.’s green flag, with Trapper getting the upper hand during the early laps of the race. After an initial early caution for the stopped cars of Mike Colsten and Mike Nagel in Turn 2, the pace of the race would increase with Trapper and Lartz leading the way.

Gular was the man on the move, making the pass of Lartz and set sail to catch Trapper. Point leader Brett Tonkin, Allan Rudalavage, Kevin Hartnett and Mike Schane all had their own battle going as the race went forward without any cautions to slow the pace. Gular and Trapper both had different grooves, and as the cars caught lapped traffic, Gular was able to take the top spot. Trapper wasn’t done as he hooked up with Gular and raced side-by-side for the lead lap after lap.

At the midpoint of the race, Gular led Trapper, Lartz, Schane and Joey Grammes, with last week’s winner Billy Thornton and Darwin Green also moving into contention. The race’s second caution flew on Lap 23 for a spin in Turn 1 by a lapped car, causing Tonkin, Rudalavage and Thornton to stop on the track. When the green came back out, Gular and Trapper continued their fierce battle with positions from three on back changing lap after lap.

Gular was able to hold a good line over the last few laps and drove to the win over Trapper, Lartz, Thornton and Grammes.

The late model feature saw Ben Whitaker and Jim O’Hara jump out to the front during the early laps of the race, with Tracy Gregory and Dan Stone moving to the front. With the lead cars glued to the inside groove, Stone saw the opening on the outside and moved into third position on Lap 6.

Whitaker and Gregory were having their own battle out front. Stone move around Gregory and chased down Whitaker to take the lead on Lap 9. With only limited cautions, Stone built up a big lead over Whitaker and Gregory. Stone held strong over the remaining laps and won for the second week in a row. Whitaker, Gregory, O’Hara and Dave Zona rounded out the top five.

Grant Hilfiger was the story of the crate sportsman race, as he started deep in the back and raced his way forward taking the lead at the halfway mark from a strong running Josh Ainey. Hilfiger then had his hands full with Ainey pressuring with Bob Janesky and Jon Carpenter making their way into the mix in a race that went green to checker. Hilfiger won his fourth sportsman feature of 2010 with Ainey, Janesky, Carpenter, and Mike Nagel Jr. following.

Shane Wolf Sr. controlled most of the S&W Awards street stock race until the final caution flew on Lap 19, setting up a one-lap shootout between last week’s winner, Butch Green, and Kevin Beach. Wolf took the restart green and moved to the inside with Green going to the top. Coming out of Turn 4, the cars were side-by-side for the win with Wolf just edging Green, with Beach third.

Joe Warren found winning to his liking as he won for the second week in a row in the four-cylinder division. Andy Brigham was second followed by Klem Underwood and Dan Wood.
