Montrose school board approved building bids

Montrose School Board approved four bids for the construction of the district’s new administration building Monday night, with a total cost of $804,080.

Business manager Michelle Lusk said that with the approval of the bids, construction can commence soon, with a proposed move in date of Nov. 30.
Superintendent Mike Ognosky noted that all four bids awarded were the low bidders.
A general contract was awarded to Axtell Construction of Clark Summit at the base amount of $579,000.
A mechanical contract was awarded to Climate Control Technologies of Endwell, N.Y., at the base amount of $101,990.
The bid for electrical contracting was awarded to Spectrum Electrical Services of Montrose, at the base amount of $46,950.
The plumbing bid was awarded to Linco Costruction, Inc. of Hunlock Creek at the base bid amount of $13,900.
Board member Chris Caterson said that the district’s costs seem to be a little higher than expected because of the requirement to pay prevailing wage for work completed on site, but that the district saved a great deal by choosing a modular building that will be constructed off site and therefore not subject to the prevailing wage requirement.
“We are going to be accountable for this for many years,” Caterson said. “The old building is in poor condition. It was slapped together out of four trailers in the late 1960s, and it’s now unfit for any type of employees to work inside.”
In other business, Ognosky’s contract as superintendent was extended through June 20, 2016, at the base amount of around $120,000 a year plus a three percent merit raise based on good performance.
A motion was made to enter into a non-binding agreement with AMSOLAR Corporation of California, submitted, at no cost to the school district, to provide a study of the potential for solar energy utilization and production.
Ognosky said that the program will hopefully help the district find ways to stabilize energy costs, as well create a basis for seeking an Energy Harvest Grant.
The following coaches were hired for the 2010 fall sports season: Brianna Strope as head field hockey coach at the rate of $3,150; and Teslee O’Brien as junior high field hockey coach at the rate of $1,750.
“Now that the coaching staff is in place, we would like to encourage students to sign up,” said Ognosky.
Principal Jim Tallerico reported that the high school building is in great shape, and that the gym in particular is much improved.
In the “Good Things Are Happening” segment of the meeting, the Montrose Area Adult School gave a presentation and annual report.
Mary Lee Fitzgerald detailed numerous successes of the adult school, including its financial health, its history of 2,200 students who have attended so far, and its 521 students currently enrolled.
She was excited to report that additional adult school offerings are also now available at Wyalusing.
