SCSB remembers teacher/coach

Susquehanna Community school board observed a moment of silence at its August 4, meeting for former teacher Denise Reddon who also served as athletic director.

Reddon retired in June after 27 years of service and passed away on July 25 after a short illness. Superintendent Bronson Stone praised the late teacher for her years of service to the district.
The board approved removing the position of athletic director from the current non-instructional contract and assigning the duties to the high school assistant principal. With this change meeting board approval, they increased the base salary of the high school assistant principal by $1,000. Justine Ord, a high school aide will be paid a $1,500 stipend for the 2010-1011 school year to provide clerical support to the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director.
During the reports of district personnel, Stone spoke to the board concerning both schools, elementary and high school, making Adequate Yearly Progress based on the most recent data. Stone said the elementary school has made AYP for the past 10 years but things were “rocky” for the high school for several of the past 10 years.
Last year the district was number one for the state’s 500 districts for gains in math and reading.
Stone also reported on the construction projects taking place at the high school and the elementary school. Both the roof and paving projects were expected to be completed this week with the heating and cooling work right on schedule. The board approved change orders pertaining to the elementary playground and the tennis courts. Among other changes approved was the work on the high school hot water tank at a cost of $60,760.
According to Stone a new one would cost approximately $500,000.
Principal Robert Keyes told the board tha maintenance has everything moving right along getting classrooms ready for the opening of school. Keyes spoke of all the training going on over the summer and the participation of those signed up for summer school.
According to Keyes there were 47 students enrolled in summer school with an average daily attendance of 33. Keyes said the average was very good taking into consideration family vacations.
Business Manager Gary Kiernan said the employer retirement contribution rate has been lowered from 8.22 percent to 5.64 percent resulting in a $78,000 decrease in the amount the district must pay into the Pennsylvania Employee Retirement System for the coming year. Kiernan said the tax bills have been distributed and he hopes that the bad economy doesn’t slow tax payers from paying their bill on time.
Special education director Joni Miller reported on the work being completed on special ed files and the training scheduled for aides. Arrangements are being made for the district aides to complete their training locally rather than travel to Harrisburg.
Miller who will be leaving her position as director of special ed, at her request, will be moving to a classroom position.
Stone spoke of Miller’s contribution to the program and thanked her for all her involvement.
The board voted to hire David Jagger as the Special Education Coordinator to replace Miller.
Resignations accepted at the August meeting were from Carol Dubas for retirement as an elementary special education teacher and Kathryn Matis as the district newsletter coordinator.
The board approved the resignation of Judy Parks from her current aide’s position and then approved Parks as a substitute aide for the 2010-2011 school year.
The board hired Carly Batzel as a high school science teacher; Rachel Arrieta as elementary K-5 teacher (one year only); Bridgett Stone as elementary special education-45 day substitute; Mike Burke, fulltime maintenance; Thomas Harvey, security/maintenance-30 hours per week; Ron Lee, security/maintenance-10 hours per week; Emily Marble, personal care aide; Michael Matis, Specialist Department Head; Raymond Testa, Jr, golf coach; John Salenkas, science mentor; Matthew Misiura, physical education/ health mentor; Jeanne Gordon, Kathleen Hilling and Suzanne Stanley as elementary mentors.Volunteers approved for the football program are David Beaudette and Mose Perry.
