Meteors have young squad

Montrose Area’s varsity football team is returning to the gridiron for another season of pigskin action with a young squad.

After finishing 2009 with a 1-9 record, coach Jack Keihl is looking to use young talent to put the Meteors in motion.
The Meteors will return five starters to the field in linemen Kurt Kimsey and Chris Spoor, running back Ethan Jones, fullback/running back Isaac Bulkley and tight end Mason Griffiths.
After losing several seniors last year included Rob Volk, Bryan Castrogiovanni and Dalton Smith, the Meteors will be filling in some gaps.
“We’ll be young,” coach Jack Keihl said. “Most of our returners are only juniors and only had field experience last year.”
And in addition to the young squad, the team will face different teams this year, as they bumped down to Lackawanna League Division III.
“We’re hoping to make an impact in the new division,” Keihl said.
However, in order to do so, the Meteors must face off against perennial frontrunner Old Forge, along with Susquehanna.
“We’re hoping the returning starters will step up this year,” Keihl said.
In addition to the returners, some newcomers will take the field as Nathan Clark steps in as running back, and last year’s backup quarterback Brett Johnson is moving up to the starting role.
Defensive lineman Jordan Christofaro, offensive linemen Bobby Dean, Kyle Smith and Josh Oliver and fullback/tight end Tim Strayer are also expected to make an impact on the field.
The 2010 Montrose Area varsity football team is comprised of seniors Dean, Griffiths, Jones, Josh Oliver and Bryce Carlton, juniors Bulkley, Christafaro, Clark, Kimsey, Spoehr, Strayer, Jeremy Dibble, Sam Henry, Brett Johnson, Leo Mock, Kyle Smith and Tim Wilson, and sophomores Evan Castrogiovanni, Will Ely, Dale Harder, John Lawson, Nick Moore, Cody Nolan, Dan Zapolski and Kody Tyson.
Montrose will begin its regular season on Friday, Sept. 3, at home against Greater Nanticoke at 7 p.m.
