Sabers returning strong nucleus

After posting a 6-4 record in the 2009 season, Susquehanna Community varsity football coach Dick Bagnall is hoping to have a strong year.

The Saber coach is returning a large nucleus of players after losing seven seniors to graduation after the 2009 season.
Susquehanna is returning quarterback Dan Kempa, offensive lineman Rob Hubal offensive/defensive linemen Mark Willchock, Brandon Saddlemire and Gage Piechoki, offensive lineman/defensive end George Wilkes, defensive lineman/tight end Sean MacDonald, tight end/defensive end Steven Skurski, wide receiver/defensive backs Cole Mallery, Austin Cowperthwait and Sean Stanley, running backs Nick Marco and Jesse Pruitt, defensive lineman Jarrett Coleman, center/defensive lineman Ryan Lee, wide receiver Jon Michael Marino and running back/defensive back Devin Fowler.
“Most of our line is intact this year,” Bagnall said. “We have a nice nucleus of kids coming back.”
He said that Kempa has a lot of experience as a quarterback and the linemen will be a strong suit of the Saber team.
“As long as we stay healthy we should do alright,” Bagnall said. “But we really don’t have a lot of depth, so that may play a role. If we have injuries we’ll have to rob Peter to pay Paul.”
In looking at the schedule, there are quite a few teams that Bagnall thinks will be suitors for the Division title.
Bagnall said that Mid Valley and Old Forge will undoubtedly be tough teams and that Lackawanna Trail, Holy Cross and Montrose will all be factors.
In trying to overpower those teams, Bagnall will look to Kempa along with receivers Mallery, Stanley and Cowperthwait to put up some numbers.
“We just have to be ready to play football,” Bagnall said. “If we stay injury free and step up we should be fine.”
The 2010 Susquehanna Saber varsity football team is comprised of seniors Coleman, Kempa, Lee, MacDonald, Marco, Skurski, Willchock, Hubal, Leo Henry, Eric Onyon and William Dolph, juniors Acone, Cowperthwait, Fowler, Marino, Piechokie, Saddlemire, Price, Pruitt, Stanley, Wilkes, Quick, Greg Price, Anthony Stark, Mitchell Wages and Jeff Wayman, and sophomores Mallery, Jager Briar and Steve Lee.
