Soggy start doesn’t dampen Fair fun

Thunder rolled in the distance, a harbinger of the storm making its way toward Harford on Monday afternoon.

The rains – although heavy at times- weren’t hard enough to keep fair enthusiasts from enjoying the 153rd Annual Harford Fair. During the downpours, fair-goers still found plenty to do and see.
But there was one event that became a weather-created casualty. Three of the competitive games were cancelled.
Fair director Cindy Reynolds said the women’s Skillet Throw and men’s Hay Bale Toss games were cancelled because the muddy arena made for unsafe throwing conditions. Only one team came to compete in the Outhouse Race – a favorite event in the Competitive Games in other years – so that, too, was also cancelled.
The children’s greased pole climb and bubble blowing/watermelon eating contest went on as scheduled after the rains let up.
In the cattle arena, 4-H members competed in the Beef and Dairy Beef Show for the title of Master Exhibitor. Jessica Sheruda, of Dalton, took the overall Master Exhibitor award.
Local producers and growers are displaying their wares at the farmer’s market tent, near the cattle barns, for the first year. Different vendors will be at the booth all week.
Harford Fair fun continues until Saturday, Aug. 21. Gates open at 8 a.m. each day.
