Cross Country preview

Elk Lake’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams have hit the course after a 22-0 finish for both team’s last season, and a District II Class AA championship title for the girls’ team.

Coach Will Squier’s teams are returning many runners from last year including Mike Bedell, Sean Carney, Bryan Grosvener, Jeff Horvath, Will Bennett and Billy Guenter on the boys’ side.
For the girls, district gold medalist Maria Trowbridge, Abby Zdancewicz, Lainey Bedell, Kirsten Hollister and Kellie Grosvenor return.
Along with the returning runners, Squier welcomes new additions Luke Jones, Matt Horvath, Jason Vermuelen and Seth Carney to the boys’ team and Emily Williams, Cassie Salsman and Elizabeth Trowbridge to the girls’ team.
“We didn’t lose any girls in our top five from last year’s team,” Squier said. “And we hope to repeat last year’s performance. We’d also like to take another run at the league title.”
The boys’ team is yet to win a District team title, and Squier is looking to get the team at the top of the podium.
“That’s a goal of ours,” Squier said. “And of course, we hope to repeat in the league.”
And in looking further down the road, Squier said he believes it’s a realistic goal to have the boys and girls both finish in the top five at states.
“As long as we keep everybody healthy and uninjured,” Squier said.
As far as tough competition this year, Squier said that on the girls’ side Honesdale and Wallenpaupack will be tough teams while Valley View will give the boys a run for their money.
Squier said that for the boys’ team he will look to seniors Carney, Bedell, Grosvenor and J. Horvath to take the lead.
“They’ve been working hard,” Squier said. “And I think we’ll see good things out of those guys.”
And for the girls’ team, he believes that M. Trowbridge will be the frontrunner, while Abby Zdancewicz will also put it a strong performance.
Elk Lake’s boys’ cross country team is comprised of seniors Carney, Bedell, Grosvenor, J. Horvath and Guenter, junior Bennett, and sophomores Jones, M. Horvath, Vermulen and S. Carney.
The Elk Lake girls’ cross country team is comprised of juniors M. Trowbridge, Zdancewicz, sophomores L. Bedell, Hollister, Williams and Grosvenor, and freshmen E. Trowbridge and Salsman.
