Even though classes don’t start until tomorrow (Aug. 26), the ElkLakeSchool District is already making changes to the school calendar.
The board decided last Tuesday to cancel classes on Wednesday, Oct. 27, because the school has been selected to host the PIAA District II cross-country championships.
To make up for the missed day, the last day of school will be pushed back to June 3, 2011.
Superintendent William Bush explained that because the district meet attracts runners and fans from dozens of school districts across northeastern Pennsylvania, traffic and parking could be an issue if school was in session.
Bush said he learned about the selection through a letter from William F. King, the District II cross-country chairman.
In the letter, King said he recently had the opportunity to observe ElkLake‘s course.
“I was extremely impressed by the layout of your course,” King wrote. “I believe ElkLake would be the ideal spot to host the District II championships.”
Bush and the board appreciated the recognition.
“It’s a great opportunity for the (school) district and our student-athletes,” the superintendent said.
“I think it’s quite an honor to be chosen,” added board member Arden Tewksbury.
In other business, the principals of the district’s schools reported on preparations for the start of school. Charles Pirone in the elementary school, Brian Mallery in the junior high school and Ken Cuomo in the high school all thanked the maintenance staff for their work during the summer.
The board voted to keep school lunch prices the same as they were in the 2009-2010 school year. Lunches cost $1.55 for elementary students and $1.65 for high school students. Extras are 75 cents. Adult lunch prices are $3.25. The cost for drinks is 30 cents for milk and orange drink, and 60 cents for Capri Sun.
Breakfast prices will remain at 75 cents for elementary and high school, and $1.40 for adults.
Also, the board voted to renew dual enrollment agreements with KeystoneCollege and LackawannaCollege. There will be no increase in tuition, Cuomo said.
The agreement with LuzerneCountyCommunity College was renewed earlier this year.
Dual enrollment enables students to take actual college courses for credit during their junior and senior years. The classes count as both college and high school courses.
Also, Cuomo informed the board that the status for a bonfire at this year’s homecoming is uncertain. That’s because the spot where the bonfire had been held in years past near the soccer field is now occupied by a storage building.
The homecoming games are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 24, with the dance the following night.
The board also approved the appointments of several coaches and activity advisers, including: Carol Selwood, junior varsity field hockey, at a stipend of $1,612; Kelly Morahan, boys’ junior varsity soccer, $1,768; Tim Woolcock, boys’ junior high soccer, $2,828; Don Watkins, boys’ junior high soccer assistant, $1,820; Christine Good, girls’ junior high tennis, $1,560; and Christine Smith, student council, $1,580.
