Montrose adopts skateboard ordinance

BY STACI WILSON

Skateboarders will no longer be able to ride their boards on the sidewalks of the Montrose business district.

Borough council adopted the ordinance at its Sept. 13 meeting. The ordinance takes effect immediately.

First offense results in confiscation of the board for 30 days; second offense results in a $50 fine.

Along with skateboards, the ordinance also bans bicycles from riding on the sidewalks.

The business district includes Public Ave., and sections of Church, South Main, Chestnut, Spruce, Chenango, Beech, Strawberry Lane and Maple streets as well as part of Grow Ave.

Portions of Memorial Park are also off-limits to the boarders, including the pavilion/play area, access ramp and walking track.

But Council is still working on developing a skateboard park at the town park in the area used in the winter time for ice skating. But the skateboard park won’t be opened until next spring.

Council also enacted a “jake brake” ordinance banning trucks from using brake retarders on Grow Ave., Church St., South Main and the north bound lane of Cherry St.

The Department of Transportation provided the borough with the routes and directions the ordinance would apply to.

An open house event will be held at the new borough building on Saturday, Oct. 9 from noon-4 p.m.
