A small child who captured the hearts of a community with her smile and galvanized people into action is gone.
Emily Donovan of Montrose, known to many as the “Purple Princess,” lost her two and one-half year battle with brain cancer on Friday, Sept. 17, but efforts in her name are continuing.
A benefit is being held on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Montrose Fire Hall. The event starts at noon.
Several local bands and performers will be lending their talent throughout the day. Performers include the Lonnie Griffiths Band, Above the Shoreline, Aaron Zona, and Hayden Brunges.
In addition to the musical entertainment, there will be raffles and food available.
Funds raised at the “Day out with Bands” will be donated to the Donovan family. She is the daughter of Joe and Janet (Kaminski) Donovan.
On Tuesday evening, a bottle and can drive, sponsored by a group called Emily’s Angels, was held in the Donald Dean & Sons parking lot. Cabot Oil and Gas Corporation pledged a dollar-for-dollar match of funds raised in the drive.
Cabot spokesman George Stark said several employees asked for the company to get involved in Emily’s Angels’ fundraising efforts.
Funeral services for Donovan were held in Montrose on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 10:15 a.m. at Bartron-Myer Funeral Home, Church St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Name of Mary church, So. Main St., at 11 a.m.
