Choconut Valley third graders worked through the scientific process, Friday afternoon, to determine what makes a better crayon, petroleum or soybeans.

The third grade experiment tested the properties of each crayon, with the students learning how to research data and come up with their own hypothesis before conducting the actual experiment and making a conclusion based on the results.

The hands-on learning opportunity was conducted by the Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab, a 40-foot trailer with 12 work stations, equipment and supplies for a variety of age-appropriate experiments for elementary and middle school students.

Choconut Valley is the first Susquehanna County school to host the PA Farm Bureau’s mobile science lab. Classes rotated through the lab throughout the week, conducting grade-appropriate experiments selected by the teachers.

Ag Lab teacher Jane Wessner led the students through the exercises, discussing the use of renewable and non-renewable products used in each of the types of crayons during the visit from Carolyn Morrison’s class.

Principal Chris McComb said the school received grants from the Susquehanna County Farm Bureau and the Community Foundation of Susquehanna and Wyoming Counties that helped offset the district’s total cost for hosting the program.

The Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab is heading to Lathrop St. Elementary in November.
