Lady Warriors take silver

MARIA and ELIZABETH TROWBRIDGE

The Elk Lake girls’ cross country team took second place at the District II Class AA championships held at the Elk Lake campus in Dimock on Wednesday.

Elk Lake’s girls were led by Elizabeth Trowbridge, who took third place at 19:33, followed by sister Maria Trowbridge in fifth at 20:14.

Holy Redeemer used a 1-2 finish from sophomores Marissa Durako and Rachel Sowinski to take the team title with 31 points ahead of Elk Lake, which finished with 40 points.

“We feel like we did really well,” Elizabeth Trowbridge said. “It was a really hard race and they did a really good job.”

Elk Lake coach Will Squier echoed Trowbridge’s sentiments, saying there was not much more his team could do.

“The truth is (Holy Redeemer) ran really well, rather than we ran all that bad,” Squier said. “They just stepped up and answered. Hats off to them. They ran a great race. They beat us up with their front four.”

Kirsten Hollister followed in 11th at 21:00, with Emily Williams taking 12th at 21:15.

Elk Lake’s team qualified for the PIAA Class AA state championship taking place in Hershey at the Parkview Cross Country Course on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Blue Ridge’s Allison Hall finished in the top five to earn a bid to states at 20:13 for the third consecutive year.

“I don’t know where that came from, but I’m glad it did,” said Hall, who has been hampered by a hip flexor injury much of this season. “I’m proud of how I finished. I’m going to states and I’m happy. I’m going to work as hard as a ican to try to do really good and go out with a bang my senior year.”

SAMANTHA BENNICI

Also earning a bid to states for the girls was Montrose’s Samantha Bennici who took sixth overall at 20:37, and teammate Allison Lewis, who took 17th overall at 21:54.

Finishing behind Lewis and Bennici for the girls was Anna Ruseski in 39th at 24:05.

The Meteor girls finished in sixth overall in the team standings with 182 points behind Holy Cross with 137.
