Susquehanna County Public Defender Linda LaBarbera has been handling the office legal load by herself for the past one and one-half years.
The office has been without an assistant public defender during that time.
At the Oct. 27 Salary Board meeting, LaBarbera’s annual pay was increased to $65,000 as compensation for the increased responsibilities. The salary increase takes effect on Nov. 4.
The position carried a 2010 budgeted salary of just over $46,000.
The board also moved to eliminate the assistant public defender position, effective Oct. 27.
LaBarbera, who attended the meeting, said that conflict counsel is appointed when necessary.
