Mountain View’s girls’ varsity soccer team was handed a loss by Lakeland in the District II Class A championship on Wednesday.
Lakeland’s Liz Burns’ booming pass was handled by Hannah Tuffy to give Lakeland a two-goal margin midway through the second half en route to a 5-1 win over Mountain View on Wednesday night at Dunmore High School.
“It was a great ball,” said Tuffy, who scored three goals, handed out an assist and had a large role in Lakeland’s other goal. “We work really well together. We were talking and it was just a great play on her part and I was there to finish.
“That’s really been a lot of our success, knowing where each other are.”
Mountain View coach Errol Mannick could only agree.
“I don’t think you can ever really stop her,” Mannick said of Tuffy. “I think you can only contain, and I think we did an OK job of that. Their strength is in their team. She’s a fantastic player and she creates everything, but their teamwork is so solid.”
Mountain View’s Alix Taylor made a long run to set up the tying goal, crossing the ball from the right wing to the front of the goal mouth, where Sarah Pulice had the defender behind her and easily pounded home the goal five minutes after Lakeland struck.
Off a corner kick by Tuffy in the 28th minute, Mora Hoyle got off a couple of shots before Jordan Tomcykoski settled a rebound for a 2-1 lead.
Alyda Dick’s save on a breakaway by Taylor seven minutes before halftime seemed to boost the Lakeland team.
“Even when we missed that breakaway I was a little scared, but I thought we’d be OK,” Mannick said. “Then in the second half when we stopped winning the ball I knew we were in a little trouble.”
Four minutes after Tuffy’s goal made it 3-1, she set up Sedorovitz, whose shot was deflected but trickled across the goal line to make it 4-1.
Tuffy’s direct kick from 30 yards rippled the top right corner of the net for the final goal in the 71st minute, sealing Lakeland’s fourth District 2 crown in the last eight years.
