Former teacher’s hearing continued

BY STACI WILSON

The Monday, Nov. 15, preliminary hearing for a former Montrose Area High School art teacher accused of sexual misconduct with a teenage student 20 years ago has been continued 30 days.

Robert Smith, Montrose, was charged Oct. 26 with aggravated indecent assault, a felony; and misdemeanor counts of corruption of minors, indecent assault and indecent exposure.

Attorney Paul Ackourey is representing Smith.

The alleged victim reported the incidents to Pennsylvania State Police in Gibson in May 2009. She told police the incidents began in Dec. 1990 and continued for about two years.

The Susquehanna County Independent does not release the identity of victims of sexual assault.

According to the police affidavit, the alleged assaults occurred in the high school art room, at her home and at the Smith residence.

The preliminary hearing has been rescheduled for Dec. 22 in Montrose District Court.
