With a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Emerson Southgate Apartments on Sunday, Nov. 7, 24 units of new housing for thos 62 or older has been made available to county residents.
The new units are adjacent to the Howard J. Emerson Apartments in Hallstead where a long waiting list prompted the Susquehanna County Housing and Redevelopment Authority to consider additional housing for that area.
According to SCHRA Executive Director Karen Allen, the funding for the newest project was made available from three sources that included $100,000 in Act 137 monies from the Susquehanna County Commissioners. The other $5 million needed for the project came from ‘stimulus’ money and the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.
The Housing Authority oversees other housing projects in the county: Turnpike Terrace in Susquehanna; William Penn Apartments in Forest City; Harford Village in Harford; and Prospect Street Apartments in Susquehanna for low to middle income families.
On hand for the dedication of Emerson Southgate besides Allen and the board of directors were Housing Manager Ann Rogers and all those who are involved with the day-to-day operation of not only the new project but all housing projects in the county; Susquehnna County Commissioners MaryAnn Warren and Leon Allen; Contractor Doug Trumbower who introduced the sub-contractors and all those who had a hand in getting the three story project open for occupancy.
