Sabers developing young talent

Susquehanna Community’s boys’ basketball team is back for another year in Lackawanna League Division III, and is looking to develop its young players’ talent.

Coach Scott Glidden said the Sabers, which had a tough year in 2009, have a lot of talent including some up and comers.

Returning to the court for the Sabers this season are senior Taylor Cundey, juniors Austin Cowperthwait and Cole Mallery, sophomores Andrzej Tomczyk, Danny Biegert and James Nilson.

After losing Brandon Stone to graduation, who is currently playing basketball at Misericordia University, Susquehanna is looking to bridge the gap.

“It was a big loss for us,” Glidden said. “He will be tough to replace.”

However, with the returning players, Glidden said that he believes the team can be competitive.

“We’re a young and developing team,” Glidden said.

But, the Sabers will have to deal with powerhouses Montrose and Lackawanna Trail in order to put up a good record in the league.

Glidden said he feels that Tomczyk is a very talented young player, and will also look to Cundey, Cowperthwait and Biegert to be strong on the floor.

Susquehanna’s boys’ varsity basketball team is comprised of senior Cundey, juniors Cowperthwait and Mallery, sophomores Tomczyk, Bieger and Nilson and freshmen Brandon Soden, Mark Zappe, Evan Stone, Josh Wheeler, Cody Powers, Nate Carpenter, Brandon Rafferty and Kyle McDonald.

Susquehanna gets is season started on Friday, Dec. 10, at home against Athens at 6 p.m.
