Grinch takes towns’ trees

BY STACI WILSON

Mere hours after a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, a holiday grinch stole Susquehanna Depot’s decorated tree from the Veteran’s Memorial located just off Main St.

On the same night, a Christmas tree was also reported stolen from the Mountain View Plaza, in Hallstead, just a few miles west of Susquehanna.

According to Susquehanna Police Sgt. Xisongkham Phonechanh, the tree was apparently taken between 3-4 a..m.

The Christmas tree was found thrown over an embankment on Front. St., in the town.

Phonechanh said borough police have some good leads on suspects and possible vehicles used in the Christmas cheer heist.

Phonechanh said, “The whole community is up in arms. They are not going to get any slap on the wrist from us on this one.”

The Susquehanna tree was not a cut tree placed at the monument, but rather was a planted tree that had to be cut by the perpetrators to be moved from the site.

The 14-foot tree in Hallstead was located at the Mountain View Plaza, on Rt. 11, and had been donated for the community’s enjoyment by the Hallstead-Great Bend Lions Club.

Anyone who has information about the stolen Christmas trees is asked to call Susquehanna Borough Police at 853.3147 or Pennsylvania State Police, Gibson, at 465-3154.
