County Farm Bureau honors Shelly

Susquehanna County Farm Bureau members took the opportunity to honor Kathie Shelly during their annual spring luncheon.

Held at the Harford Fire Hall on Saturday, April 9, the 100 attending heard of all Shelly has accomplished for the local and state Farm Bureaus since she joined in 1992.

She used her “word-smithing” skills for policy development; her interest in a clean environment as a reason to serve on the Low Level Radioactive Waste Advisory Committee for Agriculture. First appointed to serve on LLRWAC by Gov. Tom Ridge and has since served as chairman under Gov. Ed Rendell and unless Gov. Tom Corbett makes a change will continue to serve under the present administration.

Shelly also serves as Emergency Management Coordinator for Ararat Township where she resides with her husband, Ed Cameron, she is  First Responder with training in radioactivity, gas drilling sites, flooding and other severe weather incidents.

The honoree’s community involvement is not limited to Farm Bureau and Ararat Township but has included the County Housing Authority; Northern Tier Planning; Susquehanna County Conservation district; Florence Shelly Preserve Stewardship Committee; the 4-H; Game Commission and Barnes Kasson patient safety committee.

High praise for all Shelly’s involvement’s came from not only the local level but also numerous areas of state government.

Rep. Sandra Major attended the spring meeting to speak of her high principles, her service and her understanding of the highest ideals of the Farm Bureau.

Major included Rep. Tina Pickett while presenting Kathie with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. State Senators Lisa Baker and Gene Yaw, Ararat Township Supervisors and County Emergency Management  were among those sending citations for all Kathie has done for them.

Also voicing a note of thanks to the honoree were: County Commissioner MaryAnn Warren; Christine Plonski Sezer; SCFB President Donna Williams; SCFB Women’s Leadership Chairman Janice Webster; Ted Place and others who have benefited from her knowledge and expertise in many areas pertaining to Farm Bureau as well as state and local government.

Shelly introduced her husband, Pastor  Ed Cameron, who also gave the invocation, her brother Arthur Shelly. She said her daughter, Emma Irwin and grandchildren, Caroline and Benjamin, her step-son, Jason Cameron and son Owen had also attended the luncheon but due to the length of the program had found it necessary to leave before Shelly’s part of the program began.

Candidates running for office in the May primary attended the meeting and with Joe Plonski as narrator were given an opportunity to speak to members of the Farm Bureau.

Candidates for County Commissioner were: Mary Ann Warren, Leon Allen, Alan Hall, and Rick Oakley; candidates for Magisterial District Judge were: Jodi Cordner, Kathy Ragard and Raymond Telnock; Auditor candidates included Susan Jennings and Melonie Kozwalski.
