A double looped down the right-field line set the table for a six-run uprising as Blue Ridge was handed its fourth straight District II Class A championship loss, 7-3, against Old Forge on Wednesday at Mid Valley High School.
“It’s frustrating,” said Blue Ridge shortstop Gabby Wolfe, who went 4 for 4 with two doubles. “To get four of them (runner-up medals), I just wanted to win one. Especially as a senior.”
Old Forge took an early lead as the Blue Devils brought a runner home in the third. A run from Blue Ridge tied up the game in the fifth inning, and the two teams went into extra innings at 1-1.
However, after the Devils plated six runs in the top of the eighth, Blue Ridge couldn’t overcome the deficit, adding a pair of runs before falling to Old Forge.
Blue Ridge tacked on the pair of runs in the eighth with Jenna Rupakus’ two-out single, but Blue Devil pitcher Nicole Marianelli induced a grounder to first to put the lock on her fourth gold medal, and perhaps the most surprising after just a 4-10 record in the regular season.
Larissa Decker added a double for Blue Ridge while Jacki Furch had a single and a run scored.
Blue Ridge’s Courtney Ucci took the pitching loss, giving up 10 hits and three earned runs while striking out nine during eight innings in the circle.
The Raiders end their season with a 12-4 overall record.
