SCSD approves salary freezes

Susquehanna Community school board voted June 15 to approve a memorandum of understanding with the teachers association concerning a 1-year salary freeze and a 1-year extension of the current agreement.

The salary freeze for all management team employees and their one year contract extension was also approved. This action by the board continued with the same agreement for non-instructional employees; business manager; special education coordinator.

Superintendent Bronson Stone said his salary is frozen for five years.

The district’s final budget of $12. 9 million for the 2011-12 fiscal year was approved. The district millage is set at 43.33 in Susquehanna County and 14.29  in Wayne County.

Stone said the state budget has not been passed but he anticipates it will be passed before the June 30 deadline.

All those from the community who participated in the school evacuation drill were thanked by Stone. Among those working with the district were Barnes Kasson Hospital, Turnpike Terrace Apartments, Susquehanna Fire Department and the Lanesboro Police.

Approval was given to donate $100 to the Fire Department Ambulance and $75 to Barnes Kasson Hospital Foundation for their Golf Tournament.

Principal Mark Gerchman informed the board there are 30 students signed up for Summer School that will take six weeks to complete. Elementary Principal Robert Keyes spoke of the new reading series and the teacher in-service for this new series. Stone also spoke of the more complex reading text required for the Keystone exams. Tenth grade students will be focusing on non-fiction, Stone said.

Brian Niblock, the newly hired girls varsity basketball coach was introduced to the board.

According to Gerchman the coach will travel from Ithaca, N.Y., daily to work at rebuilding that program. Other coaches hired were Alice Rhone and Tom Kubas for the junior varsity and junior high girls’ basketball program. Advisers hired were: Charlene Brieden and Pamela Weiss (senior class); Carmen Maby and Pamela Weiss (junior class); Teresa Marino (drama. chorus and band); Carly Batzel (student council); Bridget O’Neill (National Honor Society); Kristin Stanford and Roxann Lloyd (yearbook); Michael Wowk (elementary choral); Carol Bushong (SADD); Hannah Taylor (Scholastic Bowl). Others hired were: Thomas Adornato (Summer behind the wheel); ESY teachers, Brittni Stall, Matthew DiLiberto, John Adams. ESY aides: Rose DeCicco, Mary Baker, Carla Perry. Michael Chesnick was hired as part-time security.

Dawn Allen was approved as a maintenance substitute. The board accepted the resignations from Thomas Harvey as part-time security and Deborah Zayas, high school aide. Volunteers approved were David Szili and Nick Felter for the weight room; Julie Hargett-Watkins, cross country and girls basketball; Alice Rhone, cross country; Joanna Soden, cross country.

Various requests for use of the facilities were also granted.

Other policies and agreements approved by the board pertained to graduation requirements; fiscal objectives and the district audit; memorandum of understanding between the Pennsylvania State Police at Gibson, the Lanesboro Police Department and the district. The Anti-bullying program to be implemented in the coming year also met with board approval.

The board accepted the resignation of Jocelyn Grossman, high school Health and Physical Education teacher effective at the end of the current school year.
