A local fly fisherman was recently invited to compete in an American Cup Fly Fishing Competition.
Wesley Congdon, 21, of Dundaff, a rising senior at Penn State University in State College and former member of the Team USA Youth Fly Fishing team, unfortunately had to decline the offer.
He is a two-time Pennsylvania state fly tying champion and two-time Team USA Youth Fly Fishing competitor.
The event, being held in Fresno, Colo., in September is a Team USA national qualifier, but conflicts with Congdon’s classes as an Ag Science major.
Congdon got an invite to the American Cup this year after competing in Montana in a qualifier for the 2010 US Adult Fly Fishing Nationals.
Despite having to turn down the offer to compete in Colorado, Congdon is looking forward to competing after he graduates in the spring of 2012.
Having the summer off is giving Congdon some time to brush up on his skills, and continues to be a motivated fisherman.
He is currently wielding a fly rod at Upper Woods Pond in Wayne County, near Union Dale, practicing Loch style fly fishing for trout.
Congdon also keeps up on river fishing as well, and can often be found fishing the Lackawanna River, the Tunkhannock Creek and several sites around State College.
