Sabers claw past Redeemer

BY HERB SMITH, Times-Shamrock Writer

Susquehanna used a balanced attack to outlast Holy Redeemer’s impressive passing offense as the Sabers posted a 32-22 win in a nonleague game Monday at William Emminger Memorial Field.

The Sabers rushed for 301 yards and three touchdowns and also had 111 yards and two scores through the air but their defense was on their heels most of the game thanks to the Royals’ air assault. David Gawlas threw for 228 yards and Jimmy Strickland added 100 yards .

“We felt that (Gawlas) would be one of the best athletes that we face all year,” Susquehanna coach Dick Bagnall said. “He’s a tremendous athlete. I’m glad I won’t see another one like him for a while.”

Holy Redeemer chewed up large chunks of yards through the air, but managed just eight yards on the ground.

“In order to keep teams honest, you have to establish the run game and that will set up your passing game,” Holy Redeemer coach Joe Ostrowski said. “Today they stopped our running game and forced us into the air.”

Bagnall said his defense focused on trying to bottle up Gawlas.

“Overall, we did well,” he said

In the first half, it was Susquehanna’s quarterback who shined. Sean Stanley threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another as the Sabers built a 20-8 halftime lead.

“We got a lot of stuff done,”Stanleysaid. “We like to mix up the pass and run. We run and then hit them with a quick pass and then once we spread them, start running again.”

Susquehanna increased its lead midway through the third quarter when Jesse Pruitt scored on a 35-yard run. Holy Redeemer answered when Gawlas hit Thomas Cosgrove for a 40-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed and Susquehanna led, 26-14.

“Gawlas is a triple threat,” Ostrowski said. “He could play quarterback, tailback and wide receiver. We try to use him as much as we can. He’s a good kid to build an offense around.”

Susquehanna responded with a 10-play, 72-yard drive that James Murnock finished with a 2-yard touchdown run.

“Overall, our running game was awesome,”Stanleysaid. “Maybe better than any of us expected.”
