A chance to just have fun

Luciano and Isabella Shea, with smiles stretching from ear to ear, played catch, saw a magic show and enjoyed free snacks Saturday night at theBlue RidgeElementary School.

The pair were two of about a dozen kids who showed up to take part in the second night of Susquehanna County CARES free family fun night.

The events were held to offer a break for those affected by recent flooding.

Despite only two families showing up Saturday, organizer Stephnie Thornton was beaming.

Even if the event only provided assistance to one family, she said, it would have been a great success.

“I think everyone needs an emotional healing and this is a way to start that process,” said Thornton. “The kids need a chance to just have fun.”

Free pizza, special story time, magic show, crafts, games and free child care for parents needing a time-out were all features of the event.

Stanley Bross brought four of his six children to the family fun night. His basement, he said, is still muddy from the flood. It’s a “work in progress,” he said.

Thorntonsaid about 12 volunteers showed up to help. Among them was Head Start employee Meghan Degilio.

“It (fun night) just gives the families a little time to not think about all that’s going on at home,” she said.

In addition to activities for kids, discounted coupons for Maloney’s Irish Pub & Restaurant were offered to interested parents.

“Being flooded myself in 2006, I just remember thinking, I just wish I could have a minute away,” said  Thornton. “I’m hoping that will go a long way for the parents, but also the kids.”
