Man accused in DUI deaths posts bail

The pickup truck driver accused in the Feb. 25 drunk driving deaths of twoNew Milfordmen who were walking along roadway was released on bail Thursday.

A certified check for $10,000 for the release of Brett Bennett, 40, Kingsley, was posted March 1 by Joseph Bennett, Hop Bottom.

Bennett’s bail was set Monday by District Judge Jodi Cordner at $100,000 or a 10 percent cash equivalent.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 19 in New Milford District Court.

Bennett faces two felony counts of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, two felony counts of homicide by vehicle, and a misdemeanor count of DUI, as well as other traffic offenses.

Police said Bennett was headed south on Rt. 11 in New Milford Borough after consuming alcohol at a tavern in Hallstead.

According to arrest papers, Bennet told police he saw someone in the road and attempted to swerve to the right but ended up striking the two men with his truck.

The men killed, Edward Turner III and Brian Thomas, were pronounced dead at the crash scene.

At the scene, Bennett also told police he had been traveling faster that he should have been in the 35 m.p.h. speed zone.
