Meteors advance in tennis districts

A pair of Montrose Area tennis players advanced to the second round of the PIAA District II Class AA singles championships atWilkesUniversityon Thursday.

Michael Roman, a senior at Montrose, stormed through the first round with 6-2 and 7-5 wins over Griffin Gerchman onDunmore.

Roman then faced fourth-seeded Walker Temperton of Scranton Prep and was eliminated from contention.

Temperton defeated Roman 6-1, 6-1 and moved on to the semifinals.

Another Montrose tennis player, sophomore Bryan Shultz took a first round victory as he defeatedMeyersHigh School’s Branden Ott with 6-2 and 6-1 victories.

However, Shultz was also defeated in the second round as he fell to Holy Cross’ Rob Azzarelli, 6-2, 6-3.

Next up for the Meteors are the PIAA District II Class AA doubles championships being held on Wednesday, May 16, at Wilkes University starting at9 a.m.
