Local runners enter Div. 1 programs

Elk Lake graduate Maria Trowbridge will run her first meet with the Southeast Missouri State University Redhawks on Sept. 14 in Edwardsville, Ill.

Several local runners have made the transition from high school to college recently, with a few entering NCAA Division I running programs.

Maria Trowbridge, anElkLakegrad, has begun running forSoutheastMissouriStateUniversity, inGirardeau,Mo.

Trowbridge, 18, said she is enjoying being with her new team atSoutheastMissouriState.

“It’s a whole new program, and a whole new experience,” Trowbridge said. “I’m really enjoying being around my new team.”

Trowbridge will compete with the Redhawks for the first time on Sept. 14 when they travel to the Siue Cross Country Challenge inEdwardsville,Ill.

She said it is a more intense experience than running in high school.

“All the girls are more focused and dedicated to running,” Trowbridge said. “It’s great to be a part of a team that’s all working towards the same thing.”

Trowbridge said her main goal for the season is to just help the team in any way she can.

“I just want to bring whatever I can to the team,” Trowbridge said. “And help out whatever way I can.”

She is majoring in nursing and said so far her class schedule has been pretty accommodating.

“We have our practices in the morning,” Trowbridge said. “Then you have time to focus on your school work.”

Trowbridge has already come in and made a mark on the program, as she finished in the top four of a preseason time trial to earn a spot on the team.

She said the Redhawks were ranked fourth in a preseason poll, and hope to finish in the top three of their conference.

ElkLakegraduate Will Bennett is also entering a college program this year, running forShippensburgUniversity.
