VARDEN – Didn’t matter which Carbondale back got the call, their offensive line had a hole waiting.
Seven different runners had carries of 10 yards or more and the Chargers racked up 339 yards on the ground, coasting to a 34-8 win over Montrose on Saturday in a game moved to Western Wayne High School because of unfinished renovations at Carbondale.
Offensive guard Bailey Hughes led the pounding up front and brothers Bradley and Brandon Sales accounted for 145 yards on the ground. Remington Hedden added another 62, quarterback Joe Gigliotti rushed for 49 and Sam Demianovich scored a pair of 3-yard touchdowns for the winners.
“Finally tonight we showed what we could do with all our experience,” Hughes said. “We love our backs. We try to give them a nice crease and we know they have the speed to take it to the house on every play.”
It didn’t take long to show off their running weapons.
Hughes recovered a fumble on Montrose’s first possession and it took the Chargers just five plays to put up a 7-0 lead.
Brandon Sales took a sweep for 13 yards on the opening play and Hedden busted a run up the gut for another 13. Three plays later, Gigliotti swept left for a 14-yard touchdown.
“We have a lot of speed and we’re just working hard and working with what we’ve got,” said Brandon Sales, who had 68 yards on eight carries.
Carbondalewas on the move on its second series when John Lawson halted the momentum with a fumble recovery, but Brandon Sales quickly got the ball back with an interception.
Seven plays and 58 yards later, Demianovich made it 14-0 on his first touchdown run, and the Chargers kept winning the point of attack, scoring on four of its five first-half possessions to build a 27-0 halftime lead.
Carbondale’s defense was pretty sharp, too, allowing just 19 rushing yards until Montrose’s final drive.
Carbondalescored on four of five first-half possessions. Demainovich capped a 66-yard drive with a punishing 3-yard run for a 20-0 lead, and Jason Martin hauled in a Gigliotti pass and went 40 yards to make it 27-0 with 6.5 seconds left.
Carbondaleput its final points on the board right after halftime, with Hedden scoring from a yard out after Ricky Jones’ 43-yard kickoff return put the Chargers in business at the Montrose 39.
