Not 24 hours after he won the Pennsylvania Junior Horseshoe Pitching Championship, Asa Mast was back to throwing.

On Saturday, Mast, 13, of Montrose, won the National Horseshoe Pitching Association Pennsylvania Junior Championship in Huntingdon, and followed it up by competing at the Kiwanis Wyoming County Fair on Sunday.

He beat out four other junior pitchers to take home the gold with 38 ringers in the competition.

Mast said he thought he had a good shot at doing well at the competition, but wasn’t sure he would win it.

“I knew I had a shot at it,” Mast said. “But it was nice to win.”

Mast got his start in horseshoe pitching with his father Leroy at PJ’s Bar in South Montrose.

Although the establishment was a little skeptical about letting a minor play in their league, they eventually gave in, and Mast has been in love with the sport ever since.

He also plays with his uncles Hank and Luke.

Mast is sanctioned to compete in events through the National Horseshoe Pitching Association and regularly travels to Groton,N.Y., to train in their indoor facility.
