Blue Ridge stand-out singers, Madison Button and Allen Weed, headline this weekend’s performances of the classic musical, “The Sound of Music.” Button and Weed were both selected to participate in the PMEA State Chorus.
Button stars as “Maria,” a young woman sent from the Nonnberg Abbey to act as the governess to the seven children of widower Captain Georg Von Trapp (Weed) before she commits herself to the life of a nun just prior to the outbreak of World War II.
Throughout the course of the play, the Captain realizes he is in love with Maria and the two, with the children in tow, flee from the Nazis over the Alps.
Button and Weed are joined on stage by Destiny Galu as Mother Abbess; and Von Trapp children: Jessica Jinghoor as Liesl; Janna Weed as Gretl; Reese Allen as Marta; Tori Auckland as Brigitta; Daniel Tierney as Kurt; Ally Phillips as Louisa; and Charlie Randall as Friedrich.
Also starring is Dustyn Carpenter as Rolf Gruber; Julia Stanley as Baroness Elsa Schraeder; and Alex Dennis as Max Detweiler.
The musical is under the direction of high school choral teacher, Amy Zakarauskas.
“The Sound of Music,” by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, is based on the memoir of Maria Von Trapp.
Blue Ridge High School will stage ‘The Sound of Music,’ May 18 at 7 p.m. and May 19 at 2 p.m., in the school auditorium. The musical features many familiar song standards including, “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and title sound, “The Sound of Music.”
There will be two performances, Saturday, May 18 at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m., in the Blue Ridge High School auditorium. There will be free busing available to the Sunday matinee performance for seniors with pickups at about 1:30 p.m. at Kime and Emerson apartments.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, and are available at the door.
