Hornets shutout Montrose

MONTROSE – Honesdale picked up its first win of the season Friday, easing three weeks of frustration with a 21-0 victory over Montrose on Friday night.

“Those first three losses were very frustrating for us, so it was nice to see the kids get a win here tonight,” Honesdale coach Jim Ludwig said. “They earned it.”

Montrose’s defense had no answer for Honesdale’s Kevin Miller or Kyle Carney, who combined for 223 rushing yards and all three Honesdale touchdowns.

Miller got the scoring started for the Hornets on a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter on Honesdale’s first possession. T.J. Knash added the first of his three extra points.

In the second quarter, Miller led his team on another scoring drive, scrambling 19 yards into the end zone to give the Hornets a 14-0 lead with 1:26 left.

Miller finished with 100 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He added another 143 passing yards on five completions.

“The game went better for us than our past three and our kids played well overall except for some big plays,” Montrose head coach Russ Canevari said. “Kevin Miller and Kyle Carney are very good athletes and played well in space so our objective was to stay disciplined and not give them any cutback lanes. Their athletic ability helped find some lapses in our defense on a couple big plays.”

Honesdale’s first possession of the second half ended with a 16-yard punt which set up the Meteors on the Honesdale 33-yard line. Montrose, which has not yet scored this season, got the ball to the Honesdale 10-yard line.

But on fourth-and-goal from the 10, Honesdale’s Joshua LoBasso intercepted a pass in the end zone, ending the Meteors’ threat.

Following the interception, Honesdale marched 84 yards in eight plays, ending with Kyle Carney bulldozing his way for an 8-yard touchdown run to complete the scoring.

Carney finished with 123 rushing yards and two receptions for 60 yards.

“We’re lucky to have two gifted athletes in our backfield,” Ludwig said. “They put us in the position to get a win and hopefully this will be a confidence builder for the rest of the season.”

Montrose’s William Hewes was the workhorse for the Meteors, carrying the ball 24 times for 115 yards.

“We played very good team defense, stayed disciplined and executed out game plan,” Canevari said. “We went back to the basics a little bit and used a power game successfully but we faltered in the red zone and couldn’t put any points on the board.”

Montrose will have its work cut out for them when they travel to play Western Wayne this Friday.

“We’re hoping to improve our running game and maintain some clock,” Canevari said. “I saw a lot of positives in our game but we still have to continue to work hard.”
