The Lackawanna Trail Lady Lions roared into Montrose on Monday, January 20, to take on the unbeaten Lady Meteors. Along with them came the Lackawanna Trail faithful fans to cheer on their team.
But the Montrose team had a large fan section as well and they were determined not to be out-cheered by the visitors in their own gym. What started out seeming like a cheering competition between fans on opposite sides of the gym, turned into a competitive basketball game.
At the end, the Lady Meteors remained undefeated in the Division IV, earning a 60-40 win, and clinching the first-half title.
The first basket of the game was a 3-pointer made by Montrose’s Meghan Gilhool bringing Montrose fans to their feet.
But the Lady Lions answered with Grace Wetzel popping in a 3-pointer of her own.
The Lions matched the Meteors basket for basket in the first quarter. Myra Lattimore, Nicki Lewis, and Morgan Groover all scored for Montrose while Trail’s Melissa Grimm did all the scoring for the Lions, putting up seven points to keep pace and end the quarter with the Meteors up 11-10 after the first eight minutes.

Lattimore took over the scoring for the Meteors in the second quarter putting in 8 points; she also had four rebounds and two steals. Gilhool knocked in another 3-pointer while Lewis, Angela Russell, and Fallon Gurn all tallied points for Montrose.
Trail’s Daria Lewandowski matched Lattimore’s eight points by sinking two 3-point shots of her own and a field goal. Grimm continued her scoring streak by adding six more points to the scoreboard. But the Meteors were starting to pull ahead, outscoring the Lions 17-14 in the second quarter to increase their lead to four points by half-time with the scoreboard reading 28-24.
Lewis came out strong for the Lady Meteors after half-time. She led the scoring for the third quarter with a 3-pointer and four more baskets. Lattimore stayed consistent and scored another eight points, three more rebounds and a blocked shot, and Gilhool earned two from the foul line.
Defensively, the Lady Meteors were all over the Lions with steals, blocks, and rebounds, practically stopping Trail from scoring with the defense.
Nicole Rosa and Grimm each added four points and Shannon Jones hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Lions 11 points in the third quarter, but Montrose scored ten points more than Trail during the quarter and increased their lead to 49-35 which quieted the visiting fans.
Gilhool found herself in foul trouble in the final quarter with four personal fouls, but that didn’t stop her from out-scoring everyone else on the floor as she added another eight points to the scoreboard for Montrose.
Groover came on strong on the defensive side of the game grabbing three rebounds, a steal, and a blocked shot. Five of the Montrose girls had five or more rebounds each; Gilhool, Lattimore, Lewis, Gurn, and Groover each asserted her dominance under the basket throughout the game.
The Lady Lions collectively added five more points to bring their final score to 40 points at the end of the fourth quarter.
The high-scorer for Montrose was Lattimore with 22, followed by Gilhool with 16, and Lewis with 15.
The high-scorer for Lackawanna Trail was Grimm with 20.

In other girls basketball action last week, Susquehanna, Mountain View and Forest City all picked up wins.

At Blue Ridge, Mashawna Hargett had 15 points and five steals and Amber Dubanowitz and Sara Serfilippi both had double-doubles to lead Susquehanna.
Dubanowitz had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Sabers and Serfilippi had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Isabella Cosmello led Blue Ridge with eight points.

At Mountain View, Cassandra Bendyk led three Forest City players in double figures with 18 points.
Carly Erdmann added 15 and Katelyn Zembrzycki had 10 for the winners.
Makenna Whitaker scored 18 and Megan Getz had 12 for Mountain View.

Elk Lake, 13
Casey Tyler led the scoring for the Lady Warriors with six points in a 55-13 lost to Mid Valley in a Division III-IV crossover game.

Elk Lake, 29
Makenna Whitaker poured in 29 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, as Mountain View cruised past Elk Lake, 62-29, in a girls Lackawanna League Division IV game Friday.
Megan Getz also had a big game for the winners, scoring 17, matching that with 17 rebounds and dishing out five assists.
Casey Tyler scored 13 for Elk Lake.

Montrose, 40
Top ranked Scranton Prep to a 52-40 win over No. 5 Montrose in a nonleague girls basketball game Saturday.
Meghan Gilhool led Montrose with 16 points and Myra Lattimore scored 10.
