Just in time for spring, Elk Lake Drama Club is performing “Ditch Day,” this Friday and Saturday, which should provide some relief for community cabin fever.
It is the day before Senior Prom at Horace Handyblender High, a day traditionally known as Ditch Day, and students are plagued with senioritis.
But this year the students have been warned that following tradition could land them in hot water.
The principal, Miss Claypool (Shanice Warner), otherwise known as “The Terror,” has vowed to track down any wayward students and make them pay dearly for their day of freedom.
Bag lady Trudy Everpopular (Natalie Newhart) works the truant students, the searching administrators, and the audience with broadly comic relish, selling lottery tickets, watches, and other devices from her raincoat.
This doesn’t deter Cliff (Matt Sterner), Adeline (Allyssa Hewitt), and their friends from upholding senior skip day tradition.
To make the event memorable, a treasure hunt has been planned, but things happen that are not what the students bargained for.
A trio of jewelry thieves (Justin Cobb, Chris Kinder, and Bri LaRue) has hidden a stolen diamond necklace in Adeline’s bag. Now, unbeknownst to the students, the thieves are watching their every move.
Meanwhile, “The Terror” and her assistant, Miss Sparrow (Haley Skinner) are also in hot pursuit. The chase is on through the art museum, a shopping mall and to the beach. Add an artist, a cop, surfer Muzzleguts, bag-lady Trudy Everpopular and fortune teller Madame Zenobia and you’ve got a day filled with zany characters and lots of laughs.
The show, written by Tim Kelly, will be performed in the Elk Lake High School auditorium, Friday and Saturday, 7 p.m. Director is Ina Braddish.
Cost of tickets is $3 and can be reserved by calling the Elk Lake School at 278-1106 ext 226 and leaving a detailed message.
