Thompson United Methodist Church was the setting for Keith Hubal’s Eagle Scout Ceremony, held on Saturday, April 5 – a fitting site for the always impressive ceremony as Keith’s Eagle project was repairing and painting the two garages located on the church property.

The 17-year-old Susquehanna Community High School junior also painted the railing on the ramp leading up to the front entrance of the church. He financed his project with funds raised within the church community. Keith is the son of David and Cheryl Hubal, of Thompson, and a member of Boy Scout Troop 81.

The opening ceremony, including presenting the colors, was led by Trevor Passetti, a member of Troop 81, with welcome by Scoutmaster Mike Gebhard and Invocation by Pastor Phyllis Hunter.

The Eagle Scout Charge, given by Eagle Scout Michael Matis was followed by Eagle Scout Donald Cottrell’s reading of “I Am—The Scouting Spirit”.

The Eagle Scout Charge stresses the Eagle Scout’s obligation to do their duty to God, to country, to their fellow scouts and to mankind in general. The new inductee is reminded that people will expect more of him and to falter would reflect not only on him but also his fellow Eagles, and all scouting.

Assistant Scoutmaster Rich Cottrell made the Eagle Badge presentation with Keith’s mother, Cheryl doing the honor of pinning her son. Eagle Scout Keith presented pins to his mother and father, as well as a mentor pin to Scoutmaster Rich Cottrell who has been there to encourage him along his road to Eagle.

Presentations included one from Stone Bridge Lions Club, Susquehanna, by Peter Niven. The local Lions Club has been a sponsor for the Boy Scout movement for many years.

Scoutmaster Gebhard presented a plaque which will hold Keith’s Eagle Scout Badge. Keith’s parents presented him a pocket knife to carry with him to remind him, “Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle.”

The ceremony closed with benediction by Troop 81 Chaplain Colleen Wilkes and the retiring of the colors. The family greeted those attending while hosting a luncheon in the church social rooms.
