Veterans, active servicemen, bands and scouts marched down Grow Avenue in Montrose Monday in the annual Memorial Day Parade.

The parade culminated at the Green in Montrose, where wreaths were bestowed, veterans recognized and thanked for their service, and most importantly, those slain in the line of duty were honored.

Speaker Lieut. John Boyer of Northumberland, of the PA Army National Guard, said, “Today this commemoration, and ceremonies all over the United States are getting together to pay tribute to those who gave themselves for us and for our way of life.”

Boyer noted that also, “It is important to reach out to those who have lost a family member, a service member, in conflict. Eleven years ago, a loved one passed away in our family….my dad answered the phone and heard a 25 year old relative say, ‘They are here, and we need you here immediately.’ He understood and left.”

He said that Memorial Day is a time for remembering families left behind, who live the rest of their lives with that void.

The Montrose combined band from Lathrop Street and Choconut Valley Elementary Schools under the direction of elementary band director Robert Bottger played a medley of patriotic songs including the National Anthem.

After the speeches, Kwader announced the top entries in the Memorial Day parade. Commander’s Choice was Troop 88 Boy Scouts of Auburn, who marched with an oversized American flag. Third place was the American Legion Auxiliary; second place was the Penn Dixie Band; and first place was the Montrose Area High School Band.
