SHELBY COLWELL

A 76-year-old woman with dementia was found safe about 20 hours after she went missing from a senior apartment building in Hallstead last week

Shelby Colwell, was reported missing on Tuesday, Aug. 26, and was located by searchers about two miles north of her residence.

She was found, unharmed and in good physical condition, in an area between the railroad tracks and the Susquehanna River by a watercraft rescue team out of Conklin, N.Y. at about noon on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

The search for Colwell began Tuesday night after she did not return from a walk where she was last spotted heading north on Main St. in Hallstead at about 4 p.m.

The search for Colwell began Tuesday night with law enforcement and emergency personnel and continued Wednesday morning with community volunteers joining the effort.

In a release issued by Pennsylvania State Police, the multi-agency effort, along with the community response and citizen volunteers, were credited with the positive outcome and were a “great asset in covering a vast area in an organized, systematic search.”

During the search, a command center was established at the Hallstead Fire Station, located near the Howard Emerson Apartments on Lackawanna Ave., where Colwell resides.
