Elk Lake girls win title at PIAA foundation race

For the second time in four days, the Elk Lake girls cross country team won a head-to-head showdown with Holy Cross.

By placing four runners among the top-18 finishers, the Lady Warriors were able to win the White division team title at the eighth annual PIAA Foundation Invitational on Saturday at the Hershey Parkview Course.

Elk Lake had 78 points and Holy Cross was second with 93 points. In a Lackawanna League meet Tuesday (Sept. 16), Elk Lake edged Holy Cross, 27-28.

It also was a good day for the Elk Lake boys as they took second in the White team standings with 160 points. Avonworth won with 119 points.

Kenzie Jones led the way for the Elk Lake girls, placing fifth in 20 minutes, 12 seconds. Katie Bennett was ninth in 20:32, Justine Johns was 14th in 20:58 and Keri Jones 18th in 21:26.

Also in the girls White race, Forest City’s Jennifer Korty was 28th in 22:21.

Hunter Bedell and Daniel Bell led Elk Lake in the boys White race, finishing 17th and 18th, respectively. Both were clocked at 18:06.

Forest City was 21st with 491 points. Tyler DeBrino was the Foresters’ top finisher in 42nd at 18:50.

Montrose’s Emma Washo placed 18th in the Girls Blue race in 20:54. The Lady Meteors were 24th in the team standings with 597 points.

Owen Brewer was 56th in 18:19 for Montrose, which was 30th with 677 points.
