When Holy Cross hosted Forest City earlier in their Lackawanna League golf match, the Foresters were left licking their wounds.
The teams met again Tuesday (Sept. 30) at Elmhurst Country Club, with league championships on the line.
Holy Cross held off a gallant effort from Forest City to post a 6½-2½ win in Class AA.
Holy Cross had its share of runaways, with Harrison Rapp and Angelo Mancinelli each triumphing, 7 and 6, and Ryan McDonald winning, 7 and 5, in individual matches.
But the Crusaders didn’t enjoy any such breathing room in three better-ball matches.
“Forest City is a good team,” Holy Cross coach Tom Paddock said. “They missed a couple of putts coming down or we would have been in trouble there. We have a lot of respect for them.”
The better-ball match went 16 holes, as did Mancinelli’s with partner Tom Dzwonczyk, whose individual match came down to the final putt. And the final team better-ball point was split, too.
“We played well,” Paddock said. “We beat a good team. It’s that simple.”
