What started out as a competition between two brothers has grown into an annual fall event. With about 20 entries, Crawford’s Giant Pumpkin Contest is now in its eighth year.
The official weigh-in was held Saturday, Oct. 12. Ron Crawford raised a 1,198 lb. pumpkin – his largest to date to take this year’s top prize.
Contestants start their pumpkins in early spring; weed out the patch as the season progresses; and then concentrate their efforts on a single plant. Growing a pumpkin that size takes up about 600 square feet, according to Crawford. His other entry at the contest was a 670 lb. squash.
The top 10 entries in the annual Crawford Giant Pumpkin Contest were:
Ron Crawford – 1198; Roger Crawford- 942; Toby and Ginny Crawford- 913; Danny Crawford – 875; Jim Crawford – 801; Chad Norris – 755; Adam Buffington – 545; Sean Hennessey – 523; Jason Dubanowitz – 505; and Dianne Burman – 494
Two Squash entries:
Ron Crawford – 670; and David Burman 140
There were 20 entries in this year’s contest.
Event organizers thanked Ron Dubas for hosting the annual pumpkin party.
