Clinging to a six-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, Riverside couldn’t shake the resilient Meteors.
On the previous play, Montrose running back Bill Hewes rumbled to an 82-yard touchdown to shift the momentum back to the Meteors.
Riverside answered in the ensuing kickoff, finding a seam and bolting to the end zone to seize back the momentum and secure the 35-21 victory for the Vikings in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division II game Friday.
Ahead just seven points in the third quarter, Riverside faced a second down with 38 yards to go. The Vikings clawed into the red zone, finishing off the drive as he pounded in a four-yard touchdown run on fourth down to give Riverside a 27-14 lead.
Hewes recorded 148 yards rushing and a touchdown on eight carries to lead Montrose (0-3 Division II, 1-7 overall) who tallied 21 points, the second-most Riverside has given up all season.
“It’s the best game we’ve played all year,” Montrose coach Lou Cella said. “It was punt coverage and kick coverage that made this what it was.”
