Montrose Area High School’s Morgan Groover began playing basketball in the third grade because her older sister, Katie, played the sport.

“I soon realized that this was the sport for me,” Groover said. “I love everything about the sport of basketball. I love that it is a contact sport and I love the demand for mental and physical toughness. I love the pace and energy of the game and I love being on the court with some of the best friends and teammates I could ask for.”

Groover is the Independent’s Student Athlete of the Week.

Groover has had an exciting high school basketball career starting that began her freshman year when the Lady Meteors made it all the way to the final four in the state and were the last public school in the Class AA tournament that year.

“I’ve had some of the best experiences of my life playing basketball. I will never forget freshman year and the things we accomplished that season.”

She returned to the state tournament with her team during her junior year.

But Groover doesn’t hang up her sneakers when the school season is over; for three years she has also played on an AAU basketball team.

She is a three sport athlete who has been the stopper on the varsity soccer team; and throws discus and shot put in track & field.

She is a member of the National Honor Society and works at Fernheim Farm in the summer months.

Family is a big part of Groover’s life. She lists her parents, Todd and Betsy Groover, as well as her grandparents, Bill and Evie Goff and Ken and Linda Matthews, among her biggest supporters.

“These family members have sacrificed a lot for me over the years and I am eternally grateful,” Groover said. “I have learned valuable lessons from all of them and credit them with my success because without their endless support and love I would not be where I am today.”

She has traveled to England, France, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales because she wanted to visit the countries that make up her ancestry.

After high school Groover plans to attend Shippensburg University and major in Criminal Justice. Her goal is to work for immigration and customs enforcement at the southwest border.
