Elk Lake
Emily Curry is a member of the basketball cheerleading squad and was voted the school’s most spirited cheerleader at the annual Red Wallace game against Carbondale Area.
“It takes a lot of dedication and you practice a lot,” Curry said. “You really need to be into what you’re doing and be passionate about it.”
Curry has been a member of the squad for three years and was voted captain this season.
“It’s really cool to help out the new girls,” the junior said. “Just giving them some pointers and pointing them in the right direction.”
She is also a member of student council and the Key Club, where she assisted in a canned food drive for Thanksgiving.
Forest City
Senior Matt Nevins spent a lot of time around the Thanksgiving holiday helping others.
The four-year starting guard on the basketball team is a member of student council, where he volunteered in the Feed-a-Friend program.
The program was able to provide 53 families in the Forest City area with a Thanksgiving meal.
Nevins is also a member of the National Honor Society.
Montrose
Basketball player Morgan Groover recently completed her senior project, where she shadowed coach Al Smith at his job as a parole officer. She would like to follow a career path in law enforcement.
“I got to sit in on court cases, investigations and prison visits to inmates,” she said.
Groover is a starter on the team. “I feel our season has gone well despite losing a lot of close games,” she said.
Mountain View
Freshman Jacelyn Evans is getting a real kick out of athletics.
Along with playing softball, Evans has been studying karate for six years and is loving it more every day.
“It started when I was with my friends on Buddy Night and I got to try out a class,” Evans said. “I really liked it and stayed with it.”
And a bonus of studying karate?
“I learned how to count to 10 in Korean,” Evans said.
The National Junior Honor Society student wants to stay with karate and eventually teach it to younger kids.
Susquehanna
The seventh-grade girls basketball team took first place recently at the third annual Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Blue Ridge.
Team members are: Leah Reyes, Geena Miller, Mackenzie Heath, MacKenzie Steele, Haley Hyndshaw, Rachel Day, Taylor Huyck, Amanda Iveson and Paetan Benson. Coaches are Dawn Steele and Jami Hyndshaw.
