State Sen. Lisa Baker (R-20), Rep. Sandra Major (R-111th), and Rep. Tina Pickett (R-110th) took the oath of office in the state Capitol in Harrisburg on Jan. 6, officially kicking off the 199th session of the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

Baker is beginning her third term as a state senator; this term marks Major’s 11th term in the state legislator; and Pickett is now serving her eighth term in office.

Baker acknowledged the serious challenges facing the Commonwealth. “People are worried about state finances and are pushing for a wide range of reforms in order to save money and improve efficiency,” she noted. “I expect serious consideration will be given to changing the public pension system and overhauling education funding.”

She added that she will continue to focus on ethics reform, beginning with a strong and enforceable cash gift ban. Other initiatives carried over from the previous legislative session include improving pipeline safety and

finding ways to better link academic and technical training with workforce needs and opportunities.

The 20th Senatorial District encompasses parts of Luzerne and Susquehanna counties and all of Pike, Wayne and Wyoming counties.

Major also was elected to serve her fifth term as Republican Caucus chairwoman of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

She was joined at the swearing in ceremony by her nephew, Colby Major, and her sister, Billie Kaye Kraus.

The 111th district includes portions of Susquehanna and Wayne counties.

Pickett serves as chairwoman of the House Insurance Committee.

The 110th district includes parts of Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna counties.
