For the past five seasons, the Western Wayne wrestling program has been the dominant force in the Lackawanna League Division II.
This season looks to be much of the same, and that dominance was on display Wednesday at Scranton Prep’s Xavier Center.
Western Wayne rolled to a 72-3 victory over Blue Ridge and then capped the night with a 58-12 rout of Scranton Prep to give coach Dante Terenzio his 100th career victory.
The Wildcats, who picked up 11 pins over the two matches, improved to 4-0 in league play and have won 35 consecutive Division II matches.
“It’s more of a reflection of where the program currently stands,” Terenzio said of his milestone. “It’s not necessarily what I’ve accomplished as a coach (but) it’s more along the lines of how far the program’s come.
“I’m fortunate enough to have a group of hard-working kids every year. I have a great assistant coach in Jerry Fuller. It’s just a team effort, really.”
Western Wayne started its match against Blue Ridge by getting pins from Braden McIntosh at 126 pounds and Marod Dobrzyn at 132 to go ahead, 12-0. Dalton Hogle then got a 4-2 decision at 145 to give Blue Ridge its only points of the match.
After Mike Maguire won by forfeit, Matthew Trygar and Josh Brown each got pins at 160 and 170 pounds, respectively, to give the Wildcats a 30-3 lead.
The Wildcats then won five of the final seven matches by forfeit. The other two victories came via pin by Dakota Swoyer at 195 and Cole Fuller at 285.
“Getting a lot of pins boosts our confidence,” Dobrzyn, whose pin took just 20 seconds, said. “It give us more momentum and confidence in ourselves.”
McIntosh and Dobrzyn again got the ball rolling for Western Wayne in its match against Scranton Prep. McIntosh started it with a pin at 132 before Dobrzyn picked up a pin at 138.
Maguire followed with a pin at 145 before Harrison Clookey and Trygar got a pair of decisions at 152 and 160 to give the Wildcats a 24-0 lead.
Brown then followed with an 11-3 major decision at 170. Western Wayne also got pins from Joe Tomasetti at 182, Bayly Williams at 285 and James Maloy at 120.
Scranton Prep got its only two wins of the match from pins by Thor Balavage at 220 and A.J. Sluko at 113.
“We still have a lot of room for improvement but we’re really coming together,” Brown said. “I think we’re looking pretty solid.”
In the first match of the tri-meet, Scranton Prep defeated Blue Ridge 48-21. The Cavaliers got pins from Bruce Parola, Ivan Balavage and Thor Balavage, while the Raiders picked up pins from David Austin and Hogle.
