Bishop Joseph Bambera, of the Scranton Diocese, spoke at the third annual Breakfast for Life held Saturday at the Montrose Bible Conference.
The Bishop shared his father’s story with the 150-plus attendees at the breakfast.
His father was raised by his grandmother after his mother died at the age of 29. She had already had five children and was pregnant with her sixth child when she contracted tuberculosis.
The doctors had told her she would need to end her pregnancy in order to sustain her own life. “She didn’t survive,” Bishop Bambera said. “She could not conceive of terminating a pregnancy even if it meant five children and a husband would be left.”
Donations from the annual breakfast benefit the Cindi Conaty Memorial Scholarship. Each year, one graduating senior is awarded a $500 scholarship for an essay.
The 2014 schloarship recipient, Paige Parkhurst, also delivered remarks, as did Cindi Conaty’s son Todd Legg, who both spoke about adoption; and CareNet’s Laura Squier who discussed the services offered by the local crisis pregnancy center.
