Meteors get win over EL

Montrose took an early 11-0 lead over the Warriors as the teams faced off for Tuesday, Jan. 20, and held on to the end claiming a 63-49 win over Elk Lake.

Seth Tewksbury was able to put the first points on the board for Elk Lake with 2 minutes and 32 seconds to go in the quarter. Tewksbury’s lay-up sparked the Warrior offense and Ben Woolcock put up four more points for Elk Lake. The Meteors added five more points to their 11 point lead.

and Jack Fruehan scored two. Smith went one of two from the foul line and the Meteors had a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors’ Bailey Newhart started his scoring spree in the second quarter and would go on to lead Elk Lake in scoring for the night. Newhart put up eight points, including a three-pointer and three foul shots. His teammate, Hunter Watkins, added two to help the Warriors outscore the Meteors 10-6 in the second quarter.

Smith, Fruehan, and Brendan Buck each scored a basket for Montrose to keep the Meteors ahead at half time 22-16.

The Warriors added 12 points to the scoreboard and the Meteors added 13 in the third. Once again Ely, Smith, and Buck scored a basket for Montrose. Smith went two of two from the foul line, but his second foul shot was voided due to a Montrose lane violation. Fruehan kept the lead for Montrose with six points.

At the other end of the court, Baliey and Watkins each scored five points and Tewksbury added two more.
The Warriors were unable to gain much ground against the first quarter 10-point deficit and the quarter ended with Montrose leading 35-28.

Fouls marked the final quarter.

Elk Lake got the bonus and one and one scoring opportunities with four minutes and two seconds left in the game. Montrose got the bonus 35 seconds later when Watkins earned his fifth personal foul and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Cole Tyler, who played aggressively trying to guard under the basket to stop the Meteors from scoring, but quickly fouled five times and had to leave the game 3 minutes and 39 seconds later. Tyler was replaced by JJ Heft for the remainder of the game.

Traver and Ely each sank their second three-pointers of the night for the Meteors and Ely added two more points and a foul shot. Fruehan and Smith made several visits to the foul line with Smith scoring on seven of his eight attempts and Fruehan making all three of his shots. Fruehan scored an additional four points and Smith an additional six.

Three pointers were made by Dalton Sherman, Newhart, and Woolcock for the Warriors. Woolcock and Tyler both scored a bucket each and Newhart, Watkins, and Woolcock shared scoring duties from the foul line.
Newhart was a perfect four for four from the line; Watkins and Woolcock were each two of four.

Newhart was the high scorer for Elk Lake with 20 points and six rebounds. He was followed by Woolcock with 11 points and six rebounds and Watkins with nine points and nine rebounds.

Montrose’s high scorer was Smith with 21 points and five rebounds, followed by Fruehan with 17 points and nine rebounds and Ely with 15 points and nine rebounds.
