Blue Ridge’s Laurren Whitney started competing on the track and field team six years ago. She was hooked when she figured out that she controlled her own success in the sport.
“In track, input equals output. One can always tell if their dedication is reciprocated in performance,” Whitney said.
The Raider senior throws the javelin and was named to this week’s Times-Tribune Division IV Honor Roll in javelin with a distance of 111 feet, 8 inches.
She’s been motivated by her success and is trying to consistently beat her previous best distance. “This season has had a terribly late start, but so far I’ve already beaten my throws from last season. I hope to make great progress,” she said.
In addition to track, Whitney is the secretary of the National Honor Society, President of FBLA, and is in Envirothon. She is a leader in the “Be a Hero” anti-bullying program, geocaching, and is part of the Blue Ridge Scholastic Quiz Bowl team, and serves as a math tutor.
She recently placed second in the state of Pennsylvania for Agribusiness at the FBLA State Competition. and will be attending the national competition in Chicago, Ill. “I’m super stoked about that,” she said.
Outside of school, Whitney is a the reigning 2014 Harford Fair Queen, and a member of the Born to Show 4-H Club. She will be showing swine and dairy this year. “I also participate in Dairy Judging and Dairy Quiz Bowl. I work at Maple Hill Farm as well,” she said.
Her love of agriculture has carried over into her future plans. She plans to attend Penn State University to major in Animal Science and minor in Agribusiness Management.
She is the daughter of Glen and Christina Whitney and resides in New Milford.
