A rapidly growing interest in pickleball, a racquet-sport that is gaining great popularity across the country, is now available for play at Memorial Park in Montrose.

In a joint effort between the Montrose Area Adult School and the Borough Council, a taped court was laid on one end of the basketball court by Craig Reimel and members of the Montrose Area Lions Club.

A portable net, easily assembled, along with racquets and balls are available at scheduled times each week: Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m.; and Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

Interested players as well as people new to the game can come to the courts for either instruction or supervised play.

Margie Plauny and Mary Lee Fitzgerald spearheaded the effort to get an outdoor court laid for summer play after two successful indoor classes were held at the adult school.

Pickleball uses a wooden racquet and whiffle balls on a smaller area than a tennis court and it is usually played with doubles. It has been described as a cross between ping-pong and tennis but regardless, it’s a great game, very aerobic, a lot of fun and easy to learn.

If you want additional information, call 570-278-3452 or email margaretplauny@gmail.com. You can also just show up on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. or Wednesdays at 5 p.m. at the park.
